1848 - Mexico: US Immigration Laws Fact 1: Articles VIII and IX of the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo that followed the Mexican American War (1846 – 1848) granted U.S. citizenship to Mexicans living in the territory ceded by Mexico to the United States.
